Today at Challenge, we celebrate our CEO, David Rogers, on his 38th anniversary with the organisation – a truly remarkable milestone. In honour of this achievement, we asked David to share a few words and reflect on his journey. Here’s what he had to say:
Looking back on the 38 years I’ve spent with Challenge, it’s hard to believe how far we’ve come. What started as a small effort to support kids and families living with cancer has grown into something truly special, and I’m incredibly humbled to have been a part of this journey since 1986.
My involvement with Challenge came from a simple desire to help, sparked by my time at Victoria University. I never imagined that what began with a Bachelor of Arts in Recreation would lead to this – years of working alongside an extraordinary team to make a difference in people’s lives. Early on, my work with wheelchair sports programs and organisations like the Spastic and Autistic Society gave me a sense of purpose, and those experiences shaped my path with Challenge.
Over the years, we’ve gone from organising just a few camps to offering a wide range of services – from in-hospital support to holiday accommodation, parent programs, and everything in between. It’s been amazing to watch this organisation grow, but none of this would have been possible without the remarkable people I’ve had the privilege to work with. It’s their hard work, dedication, and belief in what we’re doing that have made Challenge what it is today.
A moment of which I am particularly proud was seeing the Challenge Family Centre come to life in 2010. It was a vision that had been in the works for many years, and the Centre has become a place where families can find some comfort and support during such difficult times. It’s not just for the kids – it’s for the entire family. To know that we’re able to offer some relief, whether through music therapy, massage, or just a space to breathe, means everything.
I’m deeply grateful to the Challenge Board – Tom Gleisner, Angela Scaffidi, Drew Robinson, George Politis, and Craig Gathercole – whose unwavering support has been instrumental in everything we’ve achieved. Their dedication often goes unnoticed, but they are the backbone of Challenge.
At the end of the day, it’s never been about personal accolades or accomplishments. It’s about the families we’ve helped and the difference we’ve been able to make together. I’m just grateful to have played a part in this journey.
