The theme of this year’s Challenge Ball was Little Heroes, a celebration of the difference even the smallest gestures can make, and the extraordinary people who make Challenge what it is.
On Saturday 3 October, Pullman East Melbourne was once again filled with friends, familiar faces, laughter and generosity as our Challenge community came together for what was undoubtedly one of our most memorable Balls to date.
With the wonderful Tom Gleisner leading us through the evening, guests were treated to a night full of entertainment, beautiful moments and a few surprises along the way. Transit Dance dazzled the room with an incredible performance, while the cocktail bar kept the celebrations flowing as guests caught up with old friends and made new ones.
One of the most important moments of the evening came with Helen sharing her story. Her deeply personal reflection on her experience with cancer was a powerful reminder of why we had all come together. It gave everyone in the room an opportunity to consider the reality of living with cancer, the challenges that continue long after treatment, and the importance of having people beside you through it all. We are enormously grateful to Helen for sharing her story with such openness, courage and generosity.
That same spirit of generosity was felt throughout the evening, particularly during our live auction. It was wonderful to see the room come together, with guests enthusiastically raising their paddles and getting behind some incredible auction items. Every bid, donation and contribution was another reminder of just how much can be achieved when people come together for a shared purpose.
And, of course, no Challenge Ball would be complete without a little dancing! Emmanuela, Jess and Sammy on Percussion brought an incredible energy to the room, filling the dance floor and keeping the celebrations going well into the night. It was the perfect way to round out an evening that had given us so much to celebrate.
While the night was filled with wonderful entertainment, delicious food and plenty of laughter, at its heart was something much more important. Our Little Heroes theme was an opportunity to recognise the many people who make a difference in the lives of children and families living with cancer. From the remarkable children themselves and the families who show extraordinary courage every day, to our volunteers, sponsors, donors and supporters, every person has a part to play.
Sometimes that contribution is a generous donation or a successful bid at an auction. Other times it is giving up a weekend to volunteer, making a family laugh when they need it most, or simply being there when somebody needs a friend. These gestures may seem small on their own, but together they become something quite extraordinary.
To everyone who joined us, supported the evening, donated an auction item, volunteered their time or helped bring the event to life, thank you. Your generosity allows Challenge to continue creating moments of happiness, connection and relief for children and families when they need them most.
The 2026 Challenge Ball will certainly be remembered as one of our very best. Not simply because of the wonderful night we shared, but because of the people who made it possible.
After all, you don’t need a cape to be a hero. Sometimes the smallest acts can mean everything.
