There is an old saying that goes something like where there’s a will, there’s a WAVE and recently, our Challenge teens proved exactly that on the 2017 Surf Camp!
With bags packed, the group set out for Lorne early Friday, ready to embark on an ocean adventure. From surfing to wakeboarding, our surfers tested all waters!
Though initially some were like a “fish out of water” in their first surfing endeavours, they quickly found their feet “on the beach”. With wetsuits to keep them warm in the chilly Lorne waters and lessons from a legendary bunch of surf instructors from “Go Ride A Wave”, the teens were able to chase the perfect wave with a board in one hand and determination in the other.
One of the highlights of this camp is watching young people find their confidence and realise that anything is possible if you put your mind to it. All the teens seized the opportunity to be their own bosses; to regain control and belief in their abilities as strong, independent young adults. Everyone on the camp did not let their fears and insecurities deter them and instead they branched out of their comfort zone to try something new.
On Sunday afternoon, instead of dropping in on another wave, the group dropped in on the Barwon Ski Club where they had the opportunity to wake-board, ski and finish off a great weekend on the water!
This camp would not be possible without the support of many different people and organisations. We would like to thank the Cumberland Resort, Go Ride a Wave, Lorne Surf Lifesaving Club, Lorne Beach Pavilion, Barwon Ski Club, Lorne Lion’s Club, Lorne Fish & Chips and a special mention to Grandma Shields Bakery.
Thanks to our amazing volunteers who never hesitate to throw themselves into any challenge – pardon the pun!
