Meet Janice. Janice has been a Challenge volunteer since March 2006 and after attending her first camp a couple of months later she hasn't looked back. Read below to find out more about Janice and her experiences with Challenge.
I first heard about Challenge through a friend. I have always wanted to volunteer and love being with kids so thought I would join up.
My first camp was Junior Camp for kids aged 4-7. It was an overnight camp, but it felt like it went on for ages. I'd never seen kids laugh so hard at a magic show before. It was heaps of fun and I felt like I was a kid all over again.
I love working with the kids, helping them with the activities and seeing them have fun. I think it is also good that the kids don't just see us as a "babysitter", but more as a mate. Meeting other volunteers has been a lot of fun too!
The impact has been so great that I see Challenge as a new part of my life now. Knowing I can help make the kids smile is very rewarding. Personally I have also known someone who has lived with cancer so it means more to me to be a volunteer.
If I had any advice for a person wanting to be a volunteer, it would be to go in with an open mind and just have fun. You will be exhausted, but there is so much fun to have and people to meet. It's all very worth it!
After I get back home from camp and flop down on the couch, I always want to go on another camp straight away. The whole Challenge experience has been far greater than I expected. I love it! Volunteering with Challenge is one of the best things I have ever done!
